Married 43 yrs. - devoted family man, 4 children and 7 grandchildren.
Moved to Kirby Cross 4 years ago to be closer to the sea, having lived in Harold Wood for 40yrs. I am a proud member of Clacton on Sea Lions Club. Born in Corsham, Wiltshire 9th November 1948. Brought up in a farming environment until leaving school to join the Metropolitan Police as a Cadet and later attached to Bow Street. Started service as a PC in Stepney, retiring as Inspector in 1998. I was a specialist trained in Public Order, a Batton gun commander, search techniques and surveillance. Later in my service I was responsible for setting up Custody Suites, receiving commendations for my work, especially in relation for leadership and investigative skills leading to the arrest and prosecution of the driver involved in a fatal hit and run of a 12yr old girl. Efficient teamwork was paramount for the success of any operation. As a Cadet I was taught to wrestle and I also played rugby, representing the Service in both sports. 1998 employed by Barking and Dagenham Council as a CCTV Consultant until a few years later when I finally retired. Chief Executive commendation for my achievements in this respect for leadership and development. Hobbies – Building then flying radio-controlled helicopters and planes, D.I.Y, specialising in woodwork and photography, recently progressing to ariel with a drone. Recreational – keen caravaner since 1986. During this time touring most of the Southern parts of England and since pet passport, Europe, with our pet, extending South to the Black Forest. I have been a Lion since 1988. I take immense pride in serving others. The development and motivation of fellow Lions. Implementing new skills into my previous Club in relation to the use of a ride-on train complete with its own track which saw us raising both money and our profile at various fetes. My previous experience of risk assessments was evaluated in providing one for an “It’s a Knockout” event involving all age groups and copious water. This combined with other side shows which we put on to raise money. As a Lion I have held all club posts except for Treasurer. I was responsible for establishing a meaningful link with the Volunteers Section with Havering Council, attending monthly meetings which included other organisation catering for the needs of others. In both Brentwood and Romford, I was the Twinning Officer. I have attended the ALLI Course and District Governor’s Training Courses, I thoroughly enjoyed them all and learnt so much, including from my fellow attendees. You are never too old to learn – soon learnt that one. As with all incoming DGs we are set membership targets by International, we will achieve this by: Teamwork – “Together you can” - working together, listening to, and respecting each other. Development of members and evolving to meet the needs of not only our members but those of the public. Development – I have increased the number of facilitators to meet the need to evolve and provide development direct to members where required. My motto Fun – lets enjoy what we do, just importantly let the members of the public see it too. Fellowship – this revolves around teams, being part of one as an equal, sharing tasks – they are not so great that way. Service – combine the first two and this is achievable. There are no limits forget “looking outside of the box”. Imagine there is no box! Celebrate – your success, praise a member(s) for their achievements, post your club’s achievement in the public media and hold an event open to the public. If we do this, we will retain more members, a satisfied Lion remains a Lion and we will recruit more members. |
Hi, I’m Lion Chris Speed a proud member of Great Yarmouth Lions Club, all the way over on the east coast of Norfolk. For some reason I have a reputation for wearing loud clothes but I’m not sure where that has come from.
I first joined the Lions nearly 20 years ago with my now wife but unfortunately, due to work commitments and the birth of our children, I wasn’t able to give the club the time it deserved. In 2018, I re-joined the Lions to do more for the community. While progressing, I have attended a symposium, the Regional Lions Leadership Institute training, Advanced Lions Leadership Institute in Oslo and I was one of the facilitators at Symposium 6. In the last 12 months I’ve been able to visit and meet the amazing members of 26 clubs across our district. I will continue to pass my expertise onto others to help them become leaders of the future, ultimately helping our district to serve more of our community. I'm supported by my immediate family, they are Lion Jaime of Great Yarmouth Lions Club and my two daughters, Mollie and Emily, both active members of New Century Leos Club. Those that know me know that I have a great passion in Lions for Youth Engagement and Service projects. Both of these help keep our members engaged and helps us to stand out in our local areas. If done well they will help us increase our membership and grow. My moto is “Take a look at yourself and make that That Change” You have already made that change we just need others to do the same. I’m very Proud to be a Lion and remember we are just normal people making this world a better place. |
