Working together to tackle blood cancers and disorders

Lions get involved with many service projects, some of which operate at a global level and some like LIBRA that are National Projects, but this doesn’t mean that they are any less important than the global ones.

LIBRA is unique, it is the only charity in the world to solely support the haematology department at King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill in South London, where ground-breaking treatments for myeloma and other blood disorders are being created.

LIBRA is a major Lions project founded by Lions Clubs in the south-east of England in 1976, when the then District Governor Ian Scott Mackenzie of 105SE was told of the urgent need for funding for the Haematology Unit at Kings College Hospital where invaluable research and treatment was being carried out in haemophilia, leukaemia and sickle cell disease.

Essential equipment was purchased, and in 1978 Charitable Trust (276685) was set up, and a close relationship, which exists to this day, developed between the Lions of 105SE and the Haematology Unit.

What can we do?
Fundraise and donate to the Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA) through our District Treasurer.
By supporting LIBRA you will not only be helping to save lives today but also supporting research that will benefit generations to come.
The need for fundraising today is as great if not greater than it was in 1976 when it was first established. Fundraising will not only support critical advancements but it will also bring people together in a shared mission to make a difference; WE SERVE.

The current LIBRA fundraising appeal is GOING FOR GOLD which is supported by Dame Kelly Holmes MBE. This aims to raise £300,000 so that they can support the development of new and improved treatments for blood disorders and blood cancers at King’s College Hospital in London (King’s), while also helping to ensure facilities for patient care are of the highest standards. They have reached over 60% of their target, but they need our help to reach their goal.

Together we can win the battle against blood cancer and other blood disorders

Facts and information about blood cancers:
●      Blood cancer is the UK’s third biggest cancer killer, and yet awareness and understanding of it is much lower than for other types of cancer.
●      There are more than 100 different types of blood cancer, most of these are types of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

What is blood cancer?
Blood cancer is a type of cancer that affects your blood cells, and includes leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), including essential thrombocytopenia (ET), polycythaemia vera (PV) and myelofibrosis.

Blood cancer is what happens when something goes wrong with the DNA in your blood cells. These blood cells become abnormal, and multiply. These abnormal cells do not work properly, and so your blood is less able to carry out its role in keeping your body healthy, such as by fighting off infections or helping to repair your body.

How common is blood cancer?
●      Blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK. Every year around 30,000 people are diagnosed with blood cancer, and many thousands more with other serious blood disorders.
●      There are about 250,000 people living with blood cancer in the UK. One in every 16 men and one in every 22 women will develop it at some point in their lives.
●      It is the most common type of childhood cancer. Every year, more than 500 children aged under 15 are diagnosed with blood cancer. Of these, about 400 have childhood leukaemia and about 100 have lymphoma.
●      The risk of blood cancer goes up as you get older, and just under 40% of people diagnosed with it are aged 75 or over.

Our Mission:
To help advance life-saving research and treatment for blood cancers and disorders.
