Special Olympics
For over 25 years, Lions Clubs International has proudly supported Special Olympics GB by giving donations, fundraising for athletes selected for international competitions and providing volunteers to help run key events. In that time over £600,000 has been raised for the charity, in addition to the countless human hours of support in volunteering at Special Olympics events. |
Though a partnership between the two organisations Lions have been supporting Special Olympics clubs at local level and establishing a development fund for local clubs to apply for grants to support Special Olympics GB regionally and for the National Games.
Lions Clubs also provide the Families Programme at the GB National Summer Games. This is the country's largest sports event for athletes with intellectual disabilities. These activities demonstrate the fun side of being a member of Lions Clubs as the volunteers provided families with somewhere special to celebrate athletes' achievements and create some unique memories. The Special Olympics GB National Summer Games are held once every four years with in excess of 1,700 athletes from England, Scotland and Wales with learning disabilities competing in 20+ sporting events.
