I am Paul Southerton your District Governor for 2023/2024.
I retired from the Prison Service in 2008 after thirty three years as an officer doing all different types of duties. The best period in my career was when for seven years I was the main Public and Child Protection Officer for the whole Prison Service. A job I really enjoyed. I am now fully retired after spending the past four years working part time in my local pub. I have been married to my wife Sue for twenty five years and we have six lovely grandchildren that we spend as much time with as possible. We also enjoy walks with our two Romainian rescue dogs that we have now had for three years. When we can we like to go away in our motorhome with the dogs and the grandchildren who love visiting just to sleep in the bed above the cabin. I joined Swaffham lions in 1994 and I was club president twice, carnival chair three times and held other responsible jobs within the club. I transferred to King’s Lynn Lions in2013 and again I served as club president twice as well as other roles including welfare, treasurer and funday organiser. I joined the District Cabinet in 2016 as Zone chair again in 2017 and 2018. I was Region chair in 2019 and again in 2020. I joined the Multiple District cabinet in 2019 as Vulnerable Persons officer again a role I really enjoyed. I successfully completed the guiding Lion course in 2020 and again in March 2023. Last year I completed the Advanced Lions Leadership course in Brussels. This was a fantastic opportunity to meet many Lions from Across Europe, many of whom I am still in contact with. I am looking forward to the coming year as Governor in this great district of ours and my theme for the year is LIONS ARE THE HEART OF SERVICE as I believe the work we do in our communities is called service. Service starts from the centre of our communities and spreads outwards. The centre of the community is the Heart. This also ties in with Sue’s chosen charity for the year which is CARDIOMYOPATHY which is a disease of the heart that can lie dormant for many years then suddenly causes serious life changing or fatal consequences. |
Proud Lion of over 34 years service, previously a member of Brentwood, Romford and after moving home currently Clacton on Sea. My working life has been dealing with the public as a police officer then upon retirement a CCTV Consultant for a London Borough. In both employments, I was responsible for the development/modernisation of procedures to conform with current legislation, this also included the training and development of officers and staff in this respect. I was commented for my achievements in both employments.
Previous experience gained have held the post of Region and Zone Chairman and at Club level all posts, including Twinning Officer, except for Treasurer. As Certified Guiding Lion for two years I worked with Hornchurch, helping them to set up. I am a member of the GMA, Membership Satisfaction currently lead a successful team of three, we have worked with both clubs and fellow members supporting advising of various options thereby retaining them albeit sometimes in a slightly different format. I am a member of the Forward Planning Team – SPT as well as a member of the ICT and Comms attending monthly meetings for both and taking an active part in how we as a District will evolve. Recently attend an ALLI course, Advanced Lions Leadership Institute course held in Oslo together with fellow counter parts from Europe. This was an amazing course where I learnt an awful lot and benefited from the experience of others. I have enjoyed making club visits, attending charter nights and never cease to be amazed at all the good work which is being achieved by those who unselfishly devote their own time for those in need. This being signified by the milestone achievement awards which I have proudly presented in the form of chevrons. You will also find notification of this service achievement in the monthly Bulletin as it is reached. Something I asked to be published at the time rather than wait for the presentation. My goal – Support the DG’s Goals. To build upon the successes of the members of this District, enhance fellowship and to continue with the Lions Share programme. Increase Membership Satisfaction and to eradicate the reasons for members leaving – a Satisfied Lion remains a Lion. Promote teamwork – Together we Can and Together we Will. Development plays an important part in how we shape our future, to evolve and how we transition are vital to our success – Knowledge is Power. Another aspect which I am keen to progress. Above all we need to celebrate our success – I will enjoy playing a role in this! |
I’ve been a Lion for 5 years and it’s changed my life. I enjoyed my time as President and then Zone Chair so much that I stepped up to the role of 2nd Vice District Governor. I’ve always said that to help Lions grow we need to combine some of our traditions with great new ideas. Service and active members is the key to a great District
